For this year‘s Present Future section, we are presenting the young emerging artist Gamze Palabiyik.
Gamze Palabiyik (born 1999) is studying Fine Art at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under the tutelage of Alexandra Bircken. In 2025, Palabiyik was one of the three winners of our PLAYGROUND ART PRIZE.
In her artistic practice, she explores themes of fragility and physicality, as well as the tensions between tenderness and harshness, intimacy and separation. She primarily works in sculpture, often using materials that carry their own stories of vulnerability or resistance, such as metal, wax, fabric and hair.
Central to her work is an examination of societal notions of femininity, as well as the associated themes of performance, desire, discipline and pain. Her works are characterized by a sense of unease, a certain absurdity, and a deviation from expectation. Palabiyik is increasingly exploring performative elements, using her own body as a vessel for sculpture. She understands the body as a place where social norms, aesthetics, and political structures are inscribed. Her practice unfolds through processes of transformation and projection, where forms shift, stretch and resist fixed meanings.
